China Auto Market :: Overseas Auto Market

Uruguay to Increase Import Tariffs on Trucks

www.gochinaauto.com
GoChinaAuto.com: On January 7, 2010, Uruguay president issued a decree to adjust truck import tariffs, in which the import tariffs on trucks (including pickups, light trucks and heavy-duty trucks) will be increased by 7-8% from previous 23%. Car import tariffs were unchanged, being 23%.

In 2009, Uruguay totally imported about 8,000 trucks and pick-ups.

Some truck importers in Uruguay said that Uruguay Government interpreted that this adjustment of truck import tariffs is to protect Uruguay truck automakers and employment. And some importers thought that China trucks accounted for a larger proportion of the volume of Uruguay light truck import, so the adjustment has a certain impact on China truck export.

According to the tariff rules of the Southern Common Market countries, the tariff is zero within the quota of imported cars for the countries belonging to the organization, so the increase on truck tariffs, it will benefit Brazil and Argentina, and their trucks’ competitiveness will be improved in Uruguay.

Because China auto price is always cheap, while the quality is good, China vehicles are well welcomed in the world. Facing the measures of increasing import tariffs of some countries such as Russian, Uruguay, etc., how China automakers deal with? It is a real problem.
